SALT LAKE CITY — In today’s day and age, if you want to make it as an artist you really have to fight to stand out from the rest of the community. Scott Bay, the owner and founder of Scott Bay Co., is trying to do just that. He recently started his own business selling his woodwork that he creates in his garage.
Bay learned how to build from his dad and continued to study architecture in school. He’s build his own space with a closet, entertainment center, and even kitchen. There’s nothing stopping him from his passions of creating and starting his own business.
After Bay gathers the wood and the idea for his next design, he cuts down the wood into small, long pieces. These will be cut down again later and angled to create his signature designs.
When working at the saw, Bay has to stay extremely focused and be careful not to hurt himself. Luckily he hasn’t had an accident yet, but in his own words, “This saw can get pretty sketchy.”
Bay wants to make sure that he sticks out from the rest of the local artists in Salt Lake City, so to create his own signature he hand burns pieces of wood to create abstract designs and make each piece different and unique.
After cutting down the wood and burning some of the pieces, Bay creates the canvas from a square piece of wood, and marks with a pencil where he wants the design to go and where the pieces need to be cut.
After drawing on the pieces of wood, Bay goes to an angle saw to cut the pieces at a unique angle to create his designs. He goes back and forth between the saw and the canvas until he creates the perfect cut.
Bay puts pieces of wood side by side with a pencil to mark where they need to be cut to be even with the canvas.
One of Bay’s latest and favorite pieces that he’s created. You can easily see where he would cut the pieces at an angle and choose to burn certain pieces to create his unique style.
Some of his larger and favorite pieces that he’s created and that he uses to promote his art and brand.
Just like any other college student, Bay loves to doodle on his notepads. But instead of stick figures, he draws designs and buildings from his memories while he works on homework or sits in class.
